Typically, on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sullivan’s Steakhouse employees are relaxing at home and their restaurant (located at 700 W Dekalb Pike in King Of Prussia) is closed. However, on Sunday, June 10, Sullivan’s Steakhouse hosted the First Annual “Hair of the Dog” Brunch & Silent Auction, benefiting the Bucks County-based Lulu’s Rescue.
Sullivan’s Steakhouse’s Executive Chef Eric Gantz loves to think outside the box and created a unique brunch menu just for this occasion. Guests worked their way through beer and wine, scrambled eggs and hash browns, bagels and lox, quiches and sweet breads, waldorf chicken salad and roast beef mini sandwiches, and a variety of salads to fuel them for a morning of silent auction bidding and fawning over puppies.
I noticed a sea of martinis floating around me and was tempted to try their signature – The Knockout Martini – whose namesake stands true. For this smooth cocktail, bartenders soak fresh cut pineapple slices in Svedka Clementine Vodka for 14 days, followed by hand squeezing the fresh Hawaiian Gold Pineapples into a chilled martini glass.
The 85 attendees weren’t the only ones to take over Sullivan’s’ bar, back patio, and private dining room; the bouncing sounds of the Jazz Horses floated throughout the restaurant as four well-behaved, lovable puppies and a two-year old dog were led from room to room, capturing people’s hearts in the process.
“I am absolutely thrilled at how the day turned out! After having been a part of the Sullivan’s team for 12 years myself, I was fully confident that the venue, food, drink and service would be perfect and it was! Overall I know everyone had a great time, enjoyed the event and we exceeded our expectations on guest count and funds raised,” said event coordinator and Lulu’s Rescue volunteer, Gale Rippel.
“I would hope it may also encourage others to volunteer a bit of their time to making a difference. Organizations like Lulu’s can always use volunteers to foster, help transport, donate some time and spread the message of spay and neuter.” Lulu’s Rescue is a volunteer based, 15-month-old organization with a mission to rescue healthy, loving animals that are on death row in our community shelters and give them a second chance at life.
Gail Rippel and Steve Bazil are not just members of the Sullivan’s family, they adopted their Jack Russell from Lulu’s rescue two years ago and have been volunteering ever since. Gail approached Sullivan’s with the brunch proposal and their pet-loving staff were happy to oblige. To ensure all of the money went back to spaying, neutering, and saving the lives of dogs, Sullivan’s Steakhouse donated the space, alcohol and food for the event.
“We’re the neighborhood steakhouse, a lot of people have been coming here since day one. It means something to us to be special in the community, because we see these people at the grocery store, at church, at our little league games, it means something to us to separate ourselves from everything else,” said Sullivan’s Steakhouse’s General Manager Tumoor Haye.
